Meet the Siegert Fam!
This February is Congenital Heart Defects Awareness month, and in an effort to spread CHD awareness and celebrate all NICU graduates, we have teamed up with the Siegert family to raise funds for The Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. HDVCH is the largest neonatal unit in the state of Michigan and one of the nation’s top 10 largest contiguous neonatal centers. Lennon + Jack, both graduates of the NICU there, are currently thriving today...read more about their story below!

What's CHD?
Congenital Heart Awareness month promotes awareness and provides education about congenital heart defects. Congenital heart defects (CHD) are the most common birth defect. According to the CDC, 40,000 babies a year are born with a heart defect. This is about 1% of all babies in the United States. This means that nearly 1 in 100 babies are born with a heart defect. On a global level, about 1.35 million babies are born each year with CHD. Despite its prevalence, CHD research is underfunded due to a lack of public recognition.
CHD occurs when a part of the heart doesn’t develop normally. There are 360 different types of CHDs. They can cause a number of problems, including changes in blood flow, poorly developed valves, reduced oxygen levels, and holes in the heart. Some defects are milder than others. Mild heart defects may not require treatment. Complex heart defects, however, may require open-heart surgery. Sometimes more than one surgery, or a heart transplant, is necessary.
Babies born with CHD usually have certain symptoms. These include trouble breathing, poor weight gain, poor circulation, and tiring easily. Babies with reduced oxygen levels have blue lips and fingernails, which is called cyanosis. There is no cure for CHD. However, treatment can greatly enhance the quality of life and add years to a child’s life. Thanks to research and advances in pediatric cardiology, more babies than ever are reaching adulthood.

Meet Aurora!
The excitement of a first born child, the start of parenthood, baby showers, and the rush of so many emotions over 9 short months. This is what my wife and I had planned for and what we'd hoped for until our precious little girl Aurora, not even born yet, was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Defect called Aortic Stenosis. What would we do now? Where would we seek care? What would the outcome be? We'd eventually find ourselves sitting in an office at Helen Devos Children's Hospital....READ MORE HERE!
Meet Otto!
I will never forget the day we got "the call" and it will always strike me as being a bit ironic. After a few series of ultrasounds at our 20 week mark we got the call from Maternal Fetal Medicine that they needed to do an in depth ultrasound of our baby. The ironic part is I was sitting in the parking lot of the daycare facility that we were touring. It felt strange already planning out a place for our child's future before they were even here....READ MORE HERE!
Meet Maren, Norah, + Kellen!
At our 6 week ultrasound, during the height of the pandemic, I sat alone to receive the surprising news we would be expecting spontaneous triplets! Shocked, overwhelmed and so unsure, we began preparing for a life with multiples and 4 children under the age of 4, a different kind of birth plan, a guaranteed NICU stay and caring for preemie babies. After what felt like the longest and hardest pregnancy, my trio was born at 32 weeks...READ MORE HERE!
Meet Jack!
Jack was born in May 2019 and at just 7-days-old underwent his first open-heart surgery. Throughout the next 8 months, Jack would endure 5 procedures total, including 3 open-heart surgeries. It was a long first year for them, in and out of the hospital with a toddler at home, but they worked hard to maintain gratitude for Jack’s perseverance and the care he received. The experience helped solidify a purpose to them and reinforced that even when our tank is empty, there is always the ability to be empathetic towards others and love more.
